Welcome to The Black Star Ranch. Construction began in the summer of 2005 from an empty cattle pasture and has become a beautiful facility which is ever growing...still.
Located in the heart of Cajun country in Houma, Louisiana, Black Star Ranch boasts all the amenities and services of a first-class riding academy specializing in basic western riding and barrel racing.
Our local community is filled with charming southern hospitality and great Cajun cuisine, with plenty of culture, hunting and fishing. Approximately one hour from our ranch is the famous New Orleans French Quarter.
Our ranch is capable of hosting an array of equine events. Situated on 300 acres, our barns are capable of housing 70 horses. Black Star Ranch has the biggest privately owned covered area in our region. Our covered arena, which is 140 x 230, connects to our open arena, which is 125 x 220, making equine events unique.

Many people ask "Who is Team Black Star?" Team Black Star was created by the owner and founder, Kris Suard, to help support her as a beginning barrel racer. She realized early on that the process of learning to ride a horse for the first time at 37 yrs old was a great challenge, but when she set her sights on barrel racing, she needed some “young guns” as moral support. Ms. Kris carefully teamed up with two of her employees who are amateur and intermediate barrel racers to join in her quest to become a great barrel racer. These young women all work in some capacity for Ms. Kris in her companies and get the wonderful perks of riding and competing utilizing her barrel horse herd. Nica is Ms. Kris’ Business Manager, as well as, her Executive Assistant. Ellen is one of our Ranch Administrator and Breeding Manager and Mr. Suard's Executive Assistant. Each of them bring different levels, style and wonderful charm to our team and never ending support for Ms. Kris.

Introducing “Bayou Fuel”, own son of the famous stallion “Oklahoma Fuel". What is a barrel horse ranch without a stallion? In December of 2007, Ms. Kris received an offer to buy “Curly” from his previous owner, not quite ready for that endeavor but not wanting to miss this opportunity, she jumped in head first. We are expecting our first crop of his babies at Black Star in the Spring of 2009. Ms. Kris learned early on, through a tragic accident, to buy “mare power” as her competition horses. Her first barrel mare was kicked by a boarder's horse and broke her elbow. If this would have been a gelding, he would have had to be euthanized. A 9" plate and 9 screws later, she is one of our top broodmares out of an old faithful Doc Bar. Over the last few years Ms. Kris has purchased her mare power having some of the top bloodlines at our ranch. We have mares by Packin Sixes, Streakin Six, Flit Bar, Alive n Firing, Dash for Perks, Bonito Ike, Dallas Fuel, On the Money Red, Shining Spark, Peppy San Bager and Dash for Cash. Our yearling group has some of the big favorites of Dash Ta Fame, Perks Alive, Marthas Moon and Frenchmans Guy. Within the next 3 years, it is our goal to produce some of the top barrel horses from our region. Perhaps a few of our babies will make it to the futurity world.
In December, 2008 at the Barrel Futurities of American in Oklahoma City, Ms. Kris and Danny Ray of Victory Farms partnered together in the ownership of "Born Ta Be Famous" and "Famous Freddie".
While we work on growing our babies, Team Black Star will continue to work with top trainers and attend competitions in an effort to reach their goal of becoming 1D riders.
